Quand j’ai parti du Canada pour m’en aller dans les États,
j’avais une simple valise, tout mon butin était dedans.
J’avais une simple valise mais de l’argent, y’en avait pas.
Dans mon chemin, j’ai rencontré un homme que j’avais bien connu.
Il m’a demandé : « Où vas-tu? Où t’en vas-tu dans les États ?
Tu t’en vas trouver la misère ! Dans les États, vas-y donc pas. »
Il y a sept ans et quelques mois que je suis ici dans les États.
Moi, j’ai toujours bien travaillé pour nourrir mes petits enfants
le soir jusqu’au clair de la lune, le matin avant soleil levé.
Pour y être bon habitant, il faut être bon travaillant.
Il ne faut pas que la dormiture vienne nous surprendre sur le champ,
parce qu’un homme qui ferait de même, il serait mort dans peu de temps.
Quand j’ai revenu au Canada, on entend seulement que papa.
On n’entend plus la cloche sonner le matin pour nous réveiller,
On n’entend plus les cloches sonner de toutes les portes, de tous côtés.
When I left Canada To go to the States
I had a little bag With everything I owned in it.
I had a little bag, But money I had none.
Along my road I met A man I had known well.
He asked me: “Where are you going? Where in the States are you going to?
You’re just going to find misery In the States, so don’t go there.”
It’s seven years and some months I’ve been here in the States.
Me, I’ve always worked hard To feed my little kids
In the evening, when the moon shines clearly, And in the morning, before sunrise.
To be a good farmer here You’ve got to be a good worker.
There’s no way you can Be caught napping in the fields
Because a man who acts like that He would be dead in little time.
When I came back to Canada All that could be heard was Papa.
No longer could you hear the bell ringing In the morning to wake us up.
No longer could you hear the bells ringing At all the doors and on all sides
